This study compared the fatty-acid profiles of Brucella canis blood culture isolates obtained from infected dogs in the UK, Germany, Japan, South Africa, Peru, Mexico, Colombia, and Argentina, and from a human clinical case in Argentina, to a bank of isolates obtained from canine outbreaks in the USA. Analysis of a total of 42 B. canis isolates and one reference strain found a marked variation within the species. Fatty-acid analysis showed that only the isolates from Argentina, Colombia, and Mexico, which included the human B. canis isolate, contained a specific fatty acid, 19:0 cyclopropane (lactobacillic acid), w8c (cis-11,12-methylene octadecanoic acid), and that this fatty acid, when present, made up a large percentage of overall fatty-acid content. Prior to this study, the cellular fatty-acid 19:0 cyclopropane had been identified in all of the species of Brucella considered to be pathogenic to humans (B. abortus, B. melitensis, B. suis) except for B. canis. Discovering that this fatty acid not only occurs in B. canis, but also that it is only present in some strains of the species provides a new focus for investigations aimed at identifying the cause of reported geographical variability in human B. canis infection, and at finding predictors of biological behaviour and human pathogenicity within this Brucella species.

Photoinjection of electrons into silicon dioxide in metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) capacitors with 3.5 eV light is shown to create interface states with no apparent hole trapping precursor. The creation rate of these interface states depends strongly upon whether injection is from the gate metal or the silicon substrate, and on the forming gas annealing sequence used to passivate growth-induced interface states. A mechanism involving electron-induced release of hydrogen in the oxide is consistent with some aspects of the data.

An isotropic optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR) having a Lorentzian lineshape at g - 2.050 ± 0.003 and linewidth (FWHM) of 67.3 mT is observed in GaP doped with 6 - 9 × 1017 S/cm3. The ODMR at g - 2.050 is believed to arise from free electrons (or holes) in the conduction (valence) band. This ODMR is completely quenched due to non-radiative recombination in the vicinity of g - 1.99.

The silicon “dangling bond” defect plays a large part in controlling the electronic properties of a-Si, polycrystalline silicon, and the Si/Si0 2 interface. Jackson et al. have suggested that transitions of electrons occupying this defect produce the Urbach-like sub-gap absorption tail seen in two of these materials. We have performed optical and electron spin resonance measurements on polycrystalline silicon, plastically deformed silicon, and Si/Si02 interfaces to further examine this contention. In addition to seeing no measurable absorptance due to dangling bond interface states in the latter system, we conclude from the poor correlation of ESR signals with optical data that the Urbach tail in polycrystalline and deformed silicon is not due to transitions of dangling bond electrons.

The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate, primarily for the non-specialist and within the context of new and recent achievements, the diagnostic value of electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) in the study of material properties and processes. I have selected three EPR studies which demonstrate the elegance and uniqueness of EPR in atomic defect studies and exemplify unusual achievements through the use of new techniques for material measurement and preparation. A brief introduction into the origin, interaction, and detection of unpaired electrons is included.
